The Fluoride in Your Drinking Water is an Industrial Waste Product

By Dr. Mercola

Fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies to aid in the prevention of cavities.

This benefit is dubious at best, as there is practically no difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries, and no difference between states that fluoridate a high versus low percentage of their water.

Yet, while fluoride in drinking water does NOT decrease rates of tooth decay, numerous studies show that this chemical has a wide array of devastating health effects – one of them being lowered IQ.

Yet Another Study Links Fluoride to Lower IQ Levels

A review of brain studies involving the use of fluoride has concluded that one of the adverse effects of fluoride exposure on children is damage to their neurological development.1 According to the Harvard researchers, children who lived in high-fluoride areas had “significantly lower IQ than those in low fluoride areas,” with the authors noting:

“The results support the possibility of an adverse effect of high fluoride exposure on children’s neurodevelopment.”

This just adds to the growing number of animal and human studies demonstrating the damage fluoride inflicts on your brain, including your pineal gland. The results of one study looking at children’s intelligence in two towns – one with fluoridated water and one without – were particularly revealing, with about 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scoring as “bright, normal or higher intelligence” compared to only 8 percent in the high-fluoride area.2

Further, 15 percent of children in the high-fluoride city had signs of mental retardation, compared with only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city. And the study even accounted for other potential variables, such as lead exposure, iodine deficiency or a history of brain disease or head injury. There have been over 23 human studies and 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage. This includes such effects as:3

Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors Reduction in lipid content Impaired antioxidant defense systems
Damage to the hippocampus Damage to the Purkinje cells Increased uptake of aluminum
Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease) Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency Accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland

Some of these effects have been observed even at low levels of exposure, such as 1 part per million (ppm) of fluoride in water. This is below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ‘safe’ drinking water level for fluoride, which is 4 ppm, and right around the levels used in water fluoridation programs, which may range from 0.7-1.2 ppm.

The Fluoride in Your Drinking Water is an Industrial Waste Product

Did you know that the United States is one of only eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply? Even China does NOT allow water fluoridation because it’s too toxic and causes damage, according to their studies. Instead, the waste product from their phosphate fertilizer industry is shipped to the United States, where we add it to our water supply!

This is a very important point: the fluoride added to your water is NOT even pharmaceutical grade.

It’s a toxic industrial waste product, which is also contaminated with lead, arsenic, radionucleotides, aluminum and other industrial contaminants. The story gets even more convoluted, as now declassified files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission show that the original motivation for promoting fluoride and water fluoridation in the United States was to protect the bomb-, aluminum-, and other fluoride-polluting industries from liability. In the early days some of the sodium fluoride used to fluoridate water supplies in the U.S. came from Alcoa.

A couple of years later, they switched to the even more hazardous waste product hydrofluorosilicic acid from the phosphate fertilizer industry.

While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially claims that “For more than 65 years, water fluoridation has undergone extensive scientific studies and reviews to assess its public health benefits and risks. For many years, panels of experts from different health and scientific fields have provided strong evidence that water fluoridation is safe and effective,”4 this claim appears to have the flimsiest of foundations.

According to a 2006 report from the National Research Council,5 extensive amounts of research are inconclusive, or still missing and need to be conducted to evaluate the whole-body impact of fluoride …

Not only that, but their scientific review also identified research suggesting a variety of harmful effects, from skeletal fluorosis, bone fractures, and, potentially, even cancer. With that in mind, how can the CDC claim that “extensive research” has concluded water fluoridation is safe for ALL community residents, without differentiation between infants and adults, the sick or the healthy?

How can the CDC possibly claim, as they often do, that water fluoridation is one of the top public health achievements of the last century? Fluoride is a toxic agent that is biologically active in the human body where it accumulates in sensitive tissues over time, wreaks havoc with enzymes and produces a number of serious adverse health effects—including neurological and endocrine dysfunctions. So why is it still being added to so much of the U.S. water supply?

Healthy Food – Not Fluoride – Essential for Healthy Teeth

Fluoride’s predominant action is on the surface of your tooth (although even this is now questionable) and not from inside the body – so the idea that many Americans are still being forced to swallow it for their teeth defies all common reason. Good oral health and strong, healthy teeth are NOT the result of drinking fluoridated water and brushing your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste. Rather it’s virtually all about your diet.

Dr. Weston A. Price, who was one of the major nutritional pioneers of all time, completed some of the most extensive research on this topic back in the early 1900s and documented his findings in his classic book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. He found native tribes who were eating their traditional diet had nearly perfect teeth, and were almost 100 percent free of tooth decay — and they did not have toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, or root canals and fillings.

But when these tribal populations were introduced to sugar and white flour, guess what happened … their health, and their perfect teeth, rapidly deteriorated, just like the kids in El Salvador. By avoiding sugars and processed foods, you prevent the proliferation of the bacteria that cause decay in the first place.

Most people whose diet includes very little sugar and few processed foods have very low rates of tooth decay. So the simple act of limiting, or eliminating sugar, and avoiding processed foods — along with regular cleanings with your natural mercury-free dentist — will ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy and cavity-free naturally.

Infants and Children Among Those Most at Risk

Breast milk contains very little, almost no, fluoride, and this is by design. Remember, fluoride is a neurodevelopmental toxin that can damage a baby’s brain. As Dr. Paul Connett, co-author of the book, The Case Against Fluoride, explained:

“In the view of many critics of fluoridation, including Arvid Carlsson, Nobel laureate in medicine/physiology, it is reckless to expose infants to levels of fluoride orders of magnitude higher than that found in breast milk.

In the U.S., infants who are fed formula reconstituted with fluoridated tap water receive the highest levels of fluoride (per kilogram bodyweight) in the human population. Specifically, infants who are fed formula made with fluoridated water at the current level of 1 part-per-million (1 ppm = 1 mg/liter) fluoride will receive a dose up to 250 times more than the breastfed infant.

Even with the proposal by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to lower fluoride to 0.7 ppm in fluoridation schemes, bottle-fed infants will still receive up to 175 times more fluoride than the breastfed infant.

… Even though health agencies in the U.S. and other fluoridating countries have recognized that children are being grossly over-exposed to fluoride (41 percent of American children aged 12-15 now have some form of dental fluorosis), they are unwilling to concede that fluoride may be impacting the brain. Their approach has been either to ignore these studies completely or to challenge the relevance and the methodology of the fluoride-brain studies. They have thus far failed to conduct any IQ studies of their own.”

What You Can Do TODAY!

The Fluoride Action Network6 has a game plan to END water fluoridation in both Canada and the United States. Our fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada since 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get Calgary and the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow.

4 Food That Accelerate Aging

I found this article recently and knew that I had to pass it on.  This is a must read. Be healthy!

These 4 Foods Accelerate AGING (beware!)

Do you eat these harmful foods that AGE you faster?  Some are even deceptively marketed to you as “healthy” by giant food corporations.  Avoid or minimize these and look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

by Mike Geary – Certified Nutrition Specialist & Catherine Ebeling – RN, BSN
Authors of the best seller: The Top 101 Foods that FIGHT Aging
Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis, some foods age you FASTER than your real age, while other foods help to FIGHT aging.

Eat the wrong foods regularly, and you can look and feel 10 or more years OLDER than your real age (not fun!) … but eat the right foods, and over time, you can start to look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

Three of the processes that go on inside your body that have a MAJOR impact on your rate of aging are called“glycation”, “inflammation”, and “oxidation”.  When we talk about aging, we’re not just talking about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is… we’re also talking about factors that you can’t see, such as how well your organs function, and whether your joints are degrading.

Yes, I’m sure you’ll agree this is much more important than just how you look on the surface (although we’ll show you how to improve BOTH!)

So let’s dig right in and I’ll show you how your rate of aging can be directly related to the foods you might eat every day, and how to protect yourself…

Food #1 that ages you faster: Wheat (yes, even “whole wheat”)

Before I tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let’s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body…

This deals with “glycation” in your body, and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs).  These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin.

So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body?  This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levelsover time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body.  This is why type 2 diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age.  But this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics.

So, let’s get back to how “whole wheat” relates to this…

Here is a little-known fact that’s often covered up by the massive marketing campaigns by giant food companies that want you to believe that “whole wheat” is healthy for you… but the fact is that wheat contains a very unusual type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A, which has been found in some tests to spike your blood sugar HIGHER than even pure table sugar.

In fact, amylopectin-A (from wheat) raises your blood sugar MORE than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth based on blood sugar response testing that’s documented in studies.

This means that wheat-based foods such as breads, bagels, cereals, muffins, and other baked goods often cause MUCH higher blood sugar levels than most other carbohydrate sources.  If you don’t believe me, here’s something you should know… I ran personal blood sugar tests on myself using a blood glucometer about 45 minutes after eating 2 slices of wheat bread vs eating a bowl of oatmeal, with equivalent grams of carbs.

The blood sugar test results:

2 slices of whole wheat toast:
45 minutes after consumption:  Blood sugar spiked from 86 fasting level to 155.

1 Bowl of Oatmeal (equivalent grams of carbs to 2 slices wheat toast)
45 minutes after consumption:   Blood sugar raised from 86 fasting level to 112

As you know now, the higher your average blood sugar levels are over time, the more AGEs are formed inside your body, which makes you age FASTER.  Clearly, the whole wheat spiked blood sugar MUCH higher than the oatmeal, and if you don’t know, 155 is a massive blood sugar reading that will certainly contribute to faster aging if you eat wheat frequently.

You’ve probably also heard about the potential health-damaging effects of gluten (another problematic compound found in wheat that can cause inflammation in your digestive system) in the news recently, but this blood sugar aspect we just covered is not talked about that often, and is yet another reason to reduce or eliminate wheat-based foods in your diet.  Your body will thank you by aging slower and looking YOUNGER!

And losing bodyfat is typically another fun side effect of eliminating or reducing wheat in your diet!

Yet another problem with wheat-based foods and aging…

As it turns out, baked wheat products contain carcinogenic chemicals calledacrylamides that form in the browned portion of breads, cereals, muffins, etc.  These carcinogenic acrylamides have been linked in studies to possible increased risk of cancer and accelerated aging.  Note that acrylamides are also found in high levels in other browned carbohydrate sources such as french fries or any other browned starchy foods.

Don’t worry though… There’s a trick that you can use to protect yourself from these carcinogenic acrylamides, and it has to do with eating the RIGHT foods that COUNTERACT damage from these nasty chemicals.  I’ll show you how to find the EXACT foods that protect your body in a minute!

Take a break

I have taken a bit of a break and my immediate concern is that I have not been keeping up with my writing and spreading “the love”. I then, chose to reflect a bit and realized that we shouldn’t feel bad when life chooses another path and we have to let go of something else for awhile.
Do you feel like this sometimes?
I have spent the last bit of time, not spending it writing, but being with my family a bit more and not so concerned about “keeping up”. It has been very good for my person and my relationships.
There seems to be so much going on with my wife and kids that the blog had to be a lower priority.
As I first said, I feel bad, but I am trying to release that urge.
I love being able to share the lessons that we learn as we go along. So I hope that you understand and can also apply this to the lives that you are living.
I am sharing an article that I read yesterday. I love all these suggestions. They are very familiar to me and I have tried to share with my family on a regular basis.

Be healthy.

What I Learned in my 40’s

Top 5 Benefits of Himalayan Salt

December 22, 2014 by  Bruno

Salt is great for seasoning your food, but did you know certain varieties of the mineral can provide far more benefits than just flavor?

Himalayan crystal salt is more than ordinary table salt. It’s all natural, with no anti-caking agents or fillers. Dr Edward Group III DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFM writes:

Himalayan Crystal Salt contains the same 84 natural minerals and elements found in the human body. This form of salt has also been maturing over the past 250 million years under intense tectonic pressure, creating an environment of zero exposure to toxins and impurities.

Himalayan salt’s unique cellular structure allows it to store vibrational energy. Its minerals exist in a colloidal form, meaning that they are tiny enough for our cells to easily absorb.

There are many claimed benefits of Himalayan crystal salt, such as reducing the signs of aging, stronger bones, and improved sinus health. Although there is little clinical research available,  there is science and an abundance of testimonials touting the long list of health benefits. I’ve pulled together the top five benefits of this pink salt, along with some additional information.

TOP 5 BENEFITS OF HIMALAYAN CRYSTAL SALT

  1. Prevention of allergy symptoms and improved air quality
  2. Increased serotonin levels to aid in healthy sleep patterns
  3. Improved energy and mood
  4. Decreased blood pressure
  5. Supported immune system, respiratory function, and vascular health

In the two clinical research studies about Himalayan crystal salt, test subjects who consumed Himalayan salt saw significant improvements in their respiratory healthy, sleep habits, energy, concentration, and more. Here are the findings of a 2001 medical study conducted by the University of Graz:

1024px-Himalaya-Salz-1

Subjects who drank water with our Original Himalayan Crystal Salt® sole added saw significant positive changes in respiratory, circulatory, organ, connective tissue, and nervous system functions. Patients also reported increases in quality of sleep, energy, and concentration levels, brain activity, weight loss, enhanced consciousness, and noticeable hair and nail growth.

According to Dr. Oz, the potassium levels in this crystal salt also aids in lowering blood pressure. This is a huge benefit, considering sodium consumption is typically associated with hypertension.

Consuming Himalayan salt is not the only way to reap the benefits, a Himalayan crystal salt lamp will also do the trick. It consists of a large piece of salt crystal, a light, and usually a wooden base. They let off a beautiful ambient glow, but the lamp also omits negative ions as moisture evaporates from the warmed crystal. These negatively charged ions aid in cleaning the air, improving mood, and reducing allergy symptoms. According to WebMd, once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.

“You Might Not Be Getting All the Nutrients You Need, Eating That Way”

“You must have healthy grains as part of your diet.”

Do you hear this sentiment from friends and family?

Our society has been brainwashed into believing bull-caca!

If you are like me, you don’t believe “conventional” wisdom as far as you can throw it!

You may feel like you are swimming upstream sometimes, trying to keep you and your family healthy while government, relatives, and big business try to feed you loads of crap they call food!

When we tell people that we only eat fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, seeds and nuts, their immediate response is, “….what do you eat then?”

Many will wonder (because they are programmed the same way we were), how we are able to sustain our children on a diet without “whole grains?”

Some brave souls may even ask, “But what about all the healthy fibres that they are missing out on?”

I am here to tell you, you are not alone if you are getting these questions.

If you are maybe wondering yourself, then hopefully I can help you, and shed some light on this murky subject.

We didn’t get a choice when our daughter was in pain and the typical gluten free diet wasn’t the final answer. We had to hit the drawing board once again. This was the second time in less than 2 years that we had to redefine our diet, and pore through endless websites and books to try to find a solution that none of our doctors could give us.

We made a bold decision to take these things out of our diet, out of sheer desperation. We didn’t have answers, so we had to go for it and pray to God that this might fix what continued to give our daughter the excruciating discomfort, with no name.

Well, I’m here to tell you that you can survive, nay, thrive!

We are essentially following the Paleo diet, but I resist saying that because I feel it is more of a dissection of the food pyramid, or a back-to-basics-plan. I also know that people have a preconceived image of someone on a Paleo diet.

Here are the reasons that I follow the diet and want my family to learn how to do the same:

  • My full time job involves dealing with many chronically sick people, some are quite young (and I don’t want to end up that way)
  • After dealing with our immediate family diet needs, I started to look back on other family members and their ailments
  • I truly believe that health and longevity starts in your mind. If you believe you are healthy, you are.
  • Falling apart as we age is not supposed to happen at the rate that we have become accustomed to
  • The rates of autoimmune diseases, cancers, allergies and general sickness continues to go up despite advances in medicine (Cancer cases to rise 57%, Autoimmune disease on the rise, Food allergies on the rise)

I find that health is personal and people have to stand up for their beliefs. When you make changes as drastic as this, you are always going to have someone or something challenging you. You have be firm in your belief and remember it is YOUR health.

Dining out, family engagements, parties, holidays are all different and can be challenging. I suggest joining a group of like-minded people or some sort of Paleo community, as it helps to have people to share your thoughts with.

Stay healthy!

Leaky Gut Syndrome In Plain English – And How To Fix It, by Jordan Reasoner

Three years ago the doctor gave our daughter a diagnosis of celiac disease and we thought our world was upside-down. Well, after all of the testing and appointments, he sent us home with a plan to not eat gluten. That meant to look at the labels and make sure that she wasn’t getting any wheat, barley or rye in our foods.

At that time we had a typical diet of pizzas, mac and cheese and all the “normal” boxed goodness meals. We are hard working parents, doing our best to raise our beautiful children and provide nutritious meals that our tasty and healthy.

With the celiac diagnosis, came the charge to find the same type of products, just gf, so that we could continue on our similar path. This message was echoed by other families that we talked to, with the same diagnosis. “Try to eat normal diet, just take out gluten”

Fast forward 2 years and our daughter is still not gaining weight and still not feeling good. Tummy pain started about 1 year into eating gf foods.

She was getting worse! Losing weight. After a lot of our own research and sleepless nights, we found SCD and what was possibly the closest symptoms to our daughter’s. At this point there wasn’t much that could get worse.

Thank you to http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/, Jordan and Steve for going through this before and finding a solution. You have shared your stories of successes and failures.

Leaky Gut can be so confusing, but it’s becoming more and more of an epidemic.  Many of the causes and cures of Leaky Gut are widely debated, but Doctors are becoming more aware of the condition and ways to treat it.

This article is meant to shine some light on how to treat Leaky Gut Syndrome and why the SCD Diet is such a critical component to it.

Leaky Gut Explained:

The term Leaky Gut Syndrome is used to describe the condition of “Hyperpermeable Intestines”.  A fancy medical term that means the intestinal lining has became more porous, with more holes developing that are larger in size and the screening out process is no longer functioning properly.  The fallout results in larger, undigested food molecules and other “bad stuff” (yeast, toxins, and all other forms of waste) that your body normally doesn’t allow through, to flow freely into your bloodstream.

So now that we have the general essentially meaningless definition out of the way let’s find out what is really going on…

The intestinal lining is the first mechanism of defense for our immune system.  The outer layers of intestinal cells (epithelial) are connected by structures called tight junctions.  At the tips of these cells are the microvilli, which absorb properly digested nutrients and transport them through the epithelial cell and into the bloodstream.  During normal digestion process the tight junctions stay closed, forcing all molecules to effectively be screened and only pass into the blood stream through the mucosa cells (think of them like bouncers at the front of a classy bar).  For reasons we will discuss later these tight junctions can become “open” or permeable allowing un-screened molecules to flow directly into the bloodstream (think of it like a fish net with very small holes).

Graphic From: www.leakygutcure.com

So Then What Happens?

The first reaction your body has to these “foreign” bodies in your blood is to fight like hell.  Initially, your Liver is called into action to work overtime and try to screen out all the particles that your intestinal lining was supposed to be taking care of.  In most cases, the liver has no chance of keeping up with the constant flow of waste into your blood and all the toxins, undigested food molecules, yeast, and other pathogens start to accumulate in your body.

Now the sleeping giant wakes up (your immune system) and it is not happy.  It goes into full battle mode to fight the evil intruders and get them out of the body ASAP.  More often than not, the body cannot keep up with the task at hand and the majority of these foreign bodies absorb into tissues throughout the body… causing them to inflame.

Inflammation is also an immune response and causes even more stress on your system.  Now that your body is focused on fighting the large war, the little battles are starting to be ignored, like filtering out the blood, calming inflamed areas of the body, fighting bacteria, regulating the gut, etc.  This process flow can lead to your body fighting itself and an array of autoimmune diseases such as Chronic Fatigue, MS, IBS, Ulcerative Colitis, and Fibromyalgia.

Now your body will begin to produce antibody soldiers designed to fight against these foreign objects (which can be things such as the Casein protein from the milk you’re drinking, or other proteins in nuts, grains, or eggs).  Even chemicals normally found in foods such as Phenols and Glycerin can now trigger immune responses when they enter the body.  For instance, I immediately react to diary of any kind.  I get instant brain fog, a headache, sore throat, and horrible sinus drainage.  A similar reaction happens when I eat foods high in phenols such as tomato juice.  I am confident that it is all part of a reaction as a result of years with leaky gut from my Celiac Disease.

If you are having any food sensitivities to more than a dozen foods, you likely have leaky gut.  Any undigested foods that are absorbed into the blood stream are now considered enemies of the state, and your immune system will develop reactions to many of them, leading to food intolerances.  When you have a Leaky Gut condition, the damaged microvilli along the intestinal lining cannot manufacture the digestive enzymes they need to break down the food for proper digestion.  The resulting condition allows food molecules to flow into the bloodstream that have not been completely broken down into the nutrients your body needs.

Bottom Line: The foods that you’re eating are not the root of the problem; it’s the leaky gut letting the food molecules into your bloodstream.  Of course, the caveat is severe food allergies such as gluten to a Celiac or deadly peanut allergies.

How Do I Know If I Have Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Symptoms of Leaky Gut can vary from person to person depending on the level of damage and the tissues being affected.  Multiple Food Sensitivities can be a sign that your immune system is developing antibodies to everything you’re eating.  Nutritional deficiencies are a sign of lacking vitamins and minerals from the improper breakdown of food in your intestines.  Chronic diarrhea and constipation are signs of inflammation of the intestinal walls from Leaky Gut.  Skin rashes are your body’s way of trying to dump the toxins through the skin perforations.  A poor immune system will result from your body trying to wage war on itself and ignoring all the virus and bacteria we encounter on a daily basis, allowing you to get sick more often.  Headaches, brain fog, memory loss, and excessive fatigue are a result of the inflammation of tissue and toxin build up.  Yeast overgrowth (Candida) will cause cravings for sugar and carbs, gas, bloating, and anxiety.  All of these things add up to a host of symptoms with a myriad of explanations… all leading back to one thing: the constant river of foreign objects being allowed to enter your bloodstream.

What Causes Leaky Gut?

The cause of Leaky Gut is widely debated in the medical community.  However, there is some level of consensus that the following are the basic contributors:

–  Diet: Consuming high amounts of refined sugars, processed foods, preservatives, refined flours, and flavorings introduces massive amounts of chemicals into the body that is seen as toxic.  If your body has a hard time keeping up the toxins start to build up and cause inflammation (like we talked about earlier).

–  Chronic Stress: Chronic stress almost always results in a suppressed immune system.  A weakened immune system cannot handle doing it’s normal job and gets overrun with pathogens very quickly.  This increases overall gut inflammation leading to increased permeability of the intestinal lining.

–  Inflammation: Any type of inflammation in the gut can lead to leaky gut.  This can be brought on by low stomach acid (which passes undigested food into the small intestine irritating everything it passes by), yeast overgrowth (Candida), bacteria overgrowth, infection, parasites and excessive environmental toxins.

–  Medications: Any medication prescriptions or even over-the-counter pain relievers with Aspirin or Acetaminophen irritate the intestinal lining and decrease the mucosal levels (a membrane produces mucus on the intestinal lining as a natural protective measure).  This can start or help to continue the inflammation cycle (more bacteria, yeast, and digestion issues) and promotes an increase in permeability.

–  Yeast: Yeast is found in normal gut flora but as soon as it begins to get out of hand it mutates into a multi-celled fungus (usually Candida) that grows tentacles to grab onto the intestinal lining and stay put, consequently making its own holes in the lining.

–  Lack of Zinc: Zinc is a critical piece of maintaining a strong intestinal lining.  A deficiency of the vitamin can lead to the mucosal lining losing strength and becoming more permeable.  There are studies that show that supplementing with Zinc when it is deficient can dramatically improve intestinal lining integrity.

How To Fix Leaky Gut Syndrome…

The medical community is also still rather divided about the methods used to alleviate leaky gut.  Treating Leaky Gut is a multi-faceted approach that requires many different pieces of the puzzle to fall into place.  If each one is utilized, the holes in the sinking ship will plug up and allow the body to return to a more normal state.  Here are a few of the most agreed upon avenues and also where the SCD Diet comes into play:

– Diet Restrictions: Eliminating sugars, starches, grains, and any other irritating foods alleviates the inflammation and starves out the yeast overgrowth (this is where the SCD diet takes over the healing process).  Reducing both of these allows the intestinal tract to slowly return to its normal permeability, stopping the flow of foreign objects into the blood, which will stop food intolerance symptoms and eventually help stop the vicious cycle just as the book described it.  I would argue that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is the foundation of curing leaky gut, but it does need some help from the next three pieces.

Here’s a free guide to get started on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: “How To Start The SCD Diet In 24-Hours

Nutritional Supplementing: The conditions that lead to leaky gut can also cause mal-absorption and improper digestion, both of which are going to leave you with nutritional deficiencies.  First and foremost: supplementing with a good multi-vitamin, large amounts of vitamin D, and Zinc will help the intestinal lining return to normal (assuming the irritants from the diet are removed by following the SCD diet).  Essential fish oils have also been shown to really help improve the condition of the intestinal mucosal lining (omega-3’s greatly reduce inflammation among a host of other benefits).

Probiotics: Now that the Candida is being knocked down by your adherence to the SCD diet, mixing in a solid foundation of probiotics, and more specifically, the friendly bacteria Lactobacillus Acidophilus is a must.  The diet gets rid of the bad bacteria and you need a constant feed of the good bacteria to replace it.  Friendly bacteria stop the inhabitance of bad bacteria and yeast, heal the gut lining, help nutrients get absorbed, and keep the vicious cycle in check.  Studies suggest that keeping a ratio of 85% good to bad bacteria in the gut will stop the cycle from starting back up.  A good non-dairy SCD legal lactobacillus acidophilus will be very beneficial.

Digestive Enzymes: Digestive enzymes are critical to properly breaking down the foods we eat.  They are found naturally in the raw form of foods to help break them down, unfortunately, in the beginning stages of the SCD diet we have to cook all of our fruits and veggies, rendering them useless for enzymes.  The have multi-faceted skills to help alleviate leaky gut.  First, plant based enzymes will break down food into very small particles before it leaves the stomach, preventing large undigested molecules from irritating the intestinal lining and increasing nutritional uptake.  They also work through your intestines acting as garbage collectors by removing toxins, bacteria, and damaged cells of the mucosal lining.  The whole process gives the gut a clean slate of healthy cells to rebuild with.  While the leaky gut permeability remains, they do the same garbage collecting in the bloodstream if they are passed through the intestinal lining.  The bromelain and papain enzymes are shown to reduce inflammation in the gut lining and throughout other tissues in the body, allowing the immune system and the liver some reprieve.    Any SCD legal, plant based enzyme will make a world of difference here.

This term has been thrown around by GI doctors for many years as a catch all diagnosis for those with bowel dysfunction of unknown origin. Typically, IBS patients don’t respond to increased fiber and respond poorly to medication. In my experience most patients I see have been stamped with psychological problems and are told to see a psychiatrist and to manage their stress. If you fall into this category of doctor negligence, keep reading. There is hope yet… A new study published in the journal Gastroenterology confirms a direct benefit of patients suffering with IBS after following a gluten free diet. In layman’s terms the study can be summarized as follows: A gluten free diet reduced diarrhea in patients with IBS There was a noticeable and measurable increase in leaky gut (intestinal permeability) in those eating gluten. Gluten caused an increased production of inflammatory markers Everything was worse in patients who had positive gene markers for gluten sensitivity. Here is the technical summary of the study conclusion: IBS and gluten studyBACKGROUND & AIMS:: Patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) could benefit from a gluten-free diet (GFD). METHODS:: We performed a randomized controlled 4-week trial of a gluten-containing diet (GCD) or GFD in 45 patients with IBS-D; genotype analysis was performed for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. CONCLUSION:: Gluten alters bowel barrier functions in patients with IBS-D, particularly in HLA-DQ2/8-positive patients. These findings reveal a reversible mechanism for the disorder. What To Do When IBS Is Diagnosed Many get a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. As a matter of fact, this condition will affect 1 in 6 Americans. Most doctors will tell you that there is no known cause or blame stress, but there are some known causes and here is a breakdown for you: Gluten – one of the most common causes of IBS today is overexposure to glutens. This family of proteins has been shown to cause nerve damage to the synapses in the gut leading to motility issues that can cause both diarrhea and constipation. Lack of dietary fiber – lack of vegetable fibers slows down gastric transit time, but also inhibits the growth of certain types of healthy bacteria. This can translate into a variety of different gastrointestinal symptoms. **Note – psyllium fiber and other cellulose based fibers are not recommended here as they can exacerbate IBS. Stress – yes stress can play a role, but it is typically not the main issue for most being diagnosed with this condition. Infection – bowel infection of viruses, bacteria, and parasites can cause IBS Food Intolerance – different than allergy, an intolerance = inability to digest foods. When foods don’t digest in your gut, they ferment. This can produce gas, bloating, and bowel motility issues. The most common example would be lactose intolerance, however; many other foods can also contribute to this issue including processed sugars, and grains. Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies – Nutritional deficiency impacts the function of many tissues, the gut included. A common example of a nutrient deficiency that can cause IBS symptoms in magnesium. This simple mineral plays a role in how the muscles of the intestine properly contract to push foods and fluids through the bowels. Much like magnesium deficiency can cause muscle cramping in the legs, it can cause the same symptoms in the muscles that line the intestines. Lack of Exposure to Healthy Bacteria – good germs help to regulate the water balance, inflammation, and digestive processes of the gut. Most of us are overly hygienic and do not get enough exposure to dirt. Remember that aside from eating fermented foods, playing outside in the dirt is one of the best ways to maintain great exposure to good bacteria. Poor Hydration – Lack of fluid intake is extremely common. Whether by not drinking enough water or avoidance of foods that have naturally high levels of water (fruit and vegetables), most Americans stay in a state of chronic dehydration. Add to this the fact that many maintain energy levels by consuming caffeinated beverages. Remember that caffeine is a diuretic and causes excessive water loss on a consistent basis. Lack of Exercise – Movement of the body stimulates bowel flow. Those who lead a sedentary lifestyle often suffer with abnormal bowel function. If you have a problem with constipation, try light calisthenic exercise every morning after waking. You can also check out a great functional exercise program for home use here. Medications That Disrupt Any of the Above – Antibiotics, antacids, pain medications, and anti-depressants, can also disrupt the above through a variety of mechanisms. Additionally, these four groups of drugs represent the top prescribed drugs in the US. Even if you don’t take them directly, you can get exposure to low doses in the water supply. That means that drinking unfiltered tap water or showering and breathing steam (indirect exposure) can leave you exposed. See the diagram below: constipation Now Take Action After reading the above information, only you can appropriately take action and improve your gut function. Unfortunately, most doctors are not going to do it for you. You just have to rule out any of the above as potential problems your are facing (a functional medicine doctor can guide you) and TAKE ACTION. Taking action in the appropriate manner can help you restore bowel function and subsequently your health. Remember that medicating the symptoms away without finding the origin of the problem is a big mistake. Here are my top supplements for helping restore bowel function once you have addressed the above issues: Ultra Nutrients – a potent gluten free multivitamin to help protect against nutritional deficiencies. UltraImmune IgG – a potent antibody formula to help prevent infection and leaky gut. GI Restore – for intense cases of constipation, this supplement helps to get the bowels moving again Biotic Defense – a potent probiotic to help maintain healthy levels of good bacteria. Ultra Omega – a potent formula designed to aid in the normal inflammation response. This is a common problem for those with post infection IBS. Max Digest – an enzyme blend that helps break down difficult to digest grains, sugars, proteins, fats, and lectins. http://www.glutenfreesociety.org/gluten-free-society-blog/ibs-reversable-on-a-gluten-free-diet/

Are you a survivor?

Are you ready to give up?

Overcoming Any Illness

By: Jordan Reasoner

Looking back at what it took to get my health where it is today, there were hundreds of moments when I almost gave up.

These were the times I was so sick, so weak and so tired… that I was ready to quit.  Ready to give up.  Ready to be done with all this…

But in those moments, when I was teetering on the edge, something always got me through the day.  And the next day.  And the next day.  Until things got a little better.

Sometimes it was watching my son sleep.  Or my daughter’s deep blue eyes and her smile.

Other times, it took more.

Recently, a YouTube video shook me out of some personal stuff I was going through.

It was so powerful, I watched it 17 times in a row.

Something about it resonated not only with what I was going through at the time, but with something I’ve been wanting to write for you… but didn’t quite know how to say it.

About what it takes to overcome chronic illness

And with that in mind, I’m going to paraphrase some of the messages from the video and put them into the context I’ve been wanting to write for you.

I hope you enjoy it (and you can watch the original video I’m talking about at the bottom):

[Here’s the beginning of one guys humble, paraphrased Eric Thomas moment]

I’ve been reading your Facebook posts.  Your emails.

Some of you are like, “I can’t do this anymore guys.  I can’t make it another day… I’m frustrated.  I can’t take another setback.”

I’ve been reading that you’re tired.  Some of you are scared.  Some of you are hurt.  I know.  I’ve been there.

And I need you to do me a favor.

Don’t worry about the rest of this year.

Don’t worry about the rest of this month.

I’m not even interested in how you feel about tomorrow.

Do me one single favor…

Just survive today

I just need you to survive today.

I know you’re thinking “I can’t go through another day like this.”  “I can’t handle it.”

Whatever your illness is… I want you to look at the sickness in your life and think, “I can beat this!”

“I’ve got kids to live for!”

“I’ve got a family to live for!”

“I’m not through yet!”

“My life isn’t over yet!”

I went from being sick as hell to where I am now, and the first thing I did was to say, “I can get through this.”

I outlasted it.  I outlasted every single tear I shed on the toilet.

Some things in life, you just have to tell yourself, “I’m going to get through this.”

I wasn’t the strongest guy, but I made up in my mind, “I’m going to get through this.”

What was the one thing I did that most people aren’t willing to do?  I just plain never gave up.  I never quit.

Most people that fail give up.

It’s about making up your mind that you’re not going to give up. That you’re not going to quit.

Just because you’re not better yet doesn’t mean you’re a loser.  Just because the last supplement you tried didn’t help doesn’t mean the next one won’t.

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy.  It wasn’t easy for me.  I had setbacks.  I had hundreds of days I wanted to give up.

But I want you to know is this: You can get through anything if you tell yourself, “I am a survivor.”

If you’re reading this right now, I know you’re not a quitter

You’re a survivor.  I KNOW YOU’RE A SURVIVOR.

So please… just survive today.

And know this: If you were going to give up, you would’ve gave up a long time ago.  You would have quit years ago.  But you’ve come this far.  You’ve worked SO HARD.  You’ve already put in the blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point.

Get something out of it!

Don’t give up and don’t give in… and there’s absolutely nothing you can’t overcome.  Even your impossible illness.

[Here’s the end of one guys humble, paraphrased Eric Thomas moment]

Are you free Tuesday night?

There’s nothing that would make me more grateful than continuing this message with youon Tuesday night.  To give you all the information I can in 60-minutes to speed up your recovery…  to give you back your life…  to help you take control of your symptoms.

On TUES night, we’re doing another free live call on the gut-brain-hormone axis and I hope you can be there.  This one is scheduled for later in the evening so more people can attend (or if you couldn’t make the last one).

P.S. – Below is the original Eric Thomas video I graciously paraphrased in this post.  Steve and I have been watching his videos for a few years… but this one broke me down into tears and shifted something in me.  Please watch it, as it carries the original emotion only ET can inspire (and I only touched on with my humble paraphrasing):
